Moving to Dubai from Australia, A Practical Guide for Founders
Australian founders keep moving to Dubai for the same reasons. The top income tax rate reaches 47% with the Medicare levy, gains on assets held under 12 months are taxed at full marginal rates, and running a Pty Ltd keeps getting more expensive. Dubai offers a genuinely different outcome. This guide covers what Australian entrepreneurs need to understand before the move, from ATO residency rules to the CGT departure event, superannuation and banking.

How the ATO Decides Your Tax Residency
Leaving Australia does not automatically end your tax residency. The ATO applies the residency tests: the resides test, the domicile test, the 183-day test and the Commonwealth superannuation test. Spending fewer than 183 days in Australia is not enough on its own.
Breaking residency cleanly means showing a genuine, lasting move: a permanent home in Dubai, your life centered there and documented ties wound down in Australia. GenZone builds that UAE presence from day one.
The CGT Departure Event, Australia's Hidden Exit Tax
When you stop being an Australian tax resident, the ATO treats you as having sold most assets that are not taxable Australian property at market value on that day (CGT event I1). Unrealized gains on shares, crypto and some business interests can land in your final Australian return.
You can choose to defer the gain, but those assets then stay inside the Australian tax net until you sell them. Plan this with an Australian tax adviser before you leave, while GenZone sets up your Dubai company and residency in parallel.
Superannuation When You Relocate
Your super stays in your fund and generally cannot be accessed until you reach preservation age, 60 for most people, and meet a condition of release, wherever you live. Most GenZone clients leave super untouched and build new wealth through their UAE Free Zone company.
Australia has no comprehensive double tax treaty with the UAE, which makes a clean, well-documented residency exit even more important.
What to Do With Your Australian Pty Ltd
Most Australian founders either wind down their Pty Ltd or keep it only for Australian contracts, while the UAE Free Zone company becomes the main trading entity. The right answer depends on your clients, your assets and your plans, and we work through it on your strategy call.
Why Australian Founders Are Choosing Dubai
On AUD 500,000 of personal income, Australian income tax and the Medicare levy come to around AUD 200,000 a year at 2025/26 resident rates. A properly structured Dubai setup changes that picture completely.
The founders moving most often work in e-commerce, digital marketing, coaching, SaaS, crypto trading and investing and professional services. Dubai is 6 hours behind Sydney, which gives a workable overlap in the UAE morning and easy access to European hours in the afternoon.
What You Pay in Dubai, and What You Don't
The UAE has no personal income tax, so salary, dividends and capital gains you receive as an individual are not taxed. Companies pay UAE corporate tax at 9% on taxable profit above AED 375,000, and a Qualifying Free Zone Person can pay 0% on qualifying income. VAT is 5% and is administered by the Federal Tax Authority.
Every UAE company must register for corporate tax and file a return each year, even when the tax due is zero. Our UAE tax and accounting team handles registration, bookkeeping, VAT and corporate tax filings, so your structure stays clean. For the wider picture, see our UAE corporate tax statistics.
To prove where you now live, you can apply for a UAE Tax Residency Certificate. Individuals generally qualify with 183 days in the UAE in a 12-month period, or 90 days if they hold a UAE residence visa and have a permanent home or business there. Australia has no comprehensive tax treaty with the UAE, so this certificate supports your position rather than a treaty claim.
The 0% outcome comes from two things working together: a clean, documented exit from Australia tax residency, and a properly run UAE company. GenZone builds the UAE side; your Australian adviser handles the exit.
Add a US LLC for US Clients and Payments
Many founders pair their Dubai company with a US LLC. It gives you US payment rails such as Stripe, USD invoicing and a US business bank account, which helps if your clients or platforms are American.
Formation takes 24 to 48 hours, the EIN follows in 3 to 5 business days, and the company is fully operational in 7 to 10 business days. A non-resident LLC still has US filings each year, so check our US LLC compliance calendar before you start.
Manage Dubai and the US From One Account
Your Dubai company, residency visa, bank application and US LLC all sit in one GenZone account. You track every step, upload documents, see renewals coming and talk to your team in one place. You can try the platform demo before you start.
